Three Parent Baby

On April 6, 2016, a healthy baby with three DNA was born. Although the baby was not born in Mexico, the procedure was done in Mexico. The baby's mother suffered from Leigh Syndrome, a fatal genetic disorder which harms the embryos developing nervous system. After 4 miscarriages the mother decided to go to a specialist to see what she could do. She soon approached scientist Zhang for help. He decided to try the mitochondrial transfer procedure which involves taking the nucleus from the mother’s eggs and inserting it into a healthy donor’s egg that had had its nucleus removed. After doing this procedure to five eggs, he implanted the eggs into the mother and nine months later she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. M1

Currently Mexico is one of the the few countries that do allow gene editing to be experimented on. Many research and experiments has been done in Mexico due it its flexible guidelines on gene editing. Many scientist from all over the world tend to travel to Mexico just to confirm their theory or to conduct their experiment. For instance, Zhang, a scientist who lives in New york,  traveled to Mexico to perform a mitochondrial transfer for a client. M1
